EDITORIAL SERVICES

IMPORTANT: Before a copy edit, you should have a developmental or structural edit done. What's a developmental/structural edit? It's when an editor gives feedback and suggestions on your novel as a whole - the big picture edit.

A substantive editor reads your manuscript as a whole, focusing on the story arc and with an eye to help tighten it, to make the characters more sympathetic and, if necessary, to improve the ending.

I can provide a manuscript evaluation which is not as in depth as a developmental/structural edit. Please see Manuscript Evaluations in the next column.

Now, onto what I can do for you as a copy editor. I will:

correct all errors in spelling and punctuation
make sure all the chapters are numbered consecutively and formatted consistently
check for inconsistencies, and unnecessary repetition
ensure the text is clear and easily understood by the reader
do fact-checking when necessary (a quick search online if something seems incorrect). I will leave a comment/query when/if I come across such instances.

The way I work:

I make corrections and leave comments directly in the manuscript using the track changes feature in Word.

We all need an extra pair of eyes and another opinion. I can help find the weak spots in your manuscript. However, I will not ghost write or rewrite your story and my evaluation will not be as in depth as a structural edit.

I can provide suggestions on how to fix problems such as:

plot holes
structure
character development
theme
conflict
voice

Proofreading:

After your copy edit, you'll need a proofreader. The job of a proofreader is to go through your manuscript with an eye for errors that may have slipped past the copy editor (and you) before publication.

I'm not just an editor, I'm an author as well. My promise is to provide expert service at a reasonable price. Making a living as an author is not an easy gig and I don't want to make it harder than it has to be.

Copy Editing:

My fees vary depending on the project. I will ask to see the first twenty pages or so to determine the amount of work that will be involved. That said, my fees range between $0.008 to $0.011 per word for a simpler edit to $0.02 to $0.03 for a more complex edit.

Manuscript Evaluations:

Partial manuscripts (three chapters) or short stories: $100.00
Novellas up to 30,000 words: $200.00
Complete manuscripts up to 70,000 words: $400.00
Complete manuscripts between 70,000 words and 100,000 words: $500.00
Complete manuscripts between 100,000 words and 120,000 words: $650.00

Proof Reading:

For proofreading, I charge a flat rate of $20/hour. I can usually do twelve pages an hour.
